Open Question: How do I turn off the “pop up” flash on the nikon D80 when using the camera with studio lighting?

I am new to digital photography and have the Nikon D80.. I just started working with Smith Victor studio lighting(FLC200 & 110i) and am stuck on how to turn off the “pop up” flash and still allow the camera to fire off the 3 studio lights. Right now the camera opens the small flash unit and then the 3 lights will sync. But that seems to destroy the idea of the studio set up since the people are being washed out..

Open Question: Digital Photography Samples?

I am buying a new camera and am down to 2 in particular. I really need to find a site that shows samples of pictures taken with different makes of Digital camera’s. Does anyone know where I can find one please? I used to know one where users of the site upload their photos saying which camera they used, but I don’t know how to find it anymore…..any help would be really appreciated. Thank you

Open Question: I want to buy some flash triggers but not sure how they work exactly?

I’m thinking of buying this: http://www.amazon.com/ePhoto-Photography-umbrellas-shoemount-ePhotoINC/dp/B003QRX4PC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1280547968&sr=8-2 I use a D40. It says it fits the SB 600, 800, and 900, but I use an off-name phoenix flash. This one: http://www.amazon.com/Phoenix-SmartFlash-Nikon-Digital-Cameras/dp/B0010HGEOI/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1280550302&sr=1-5 So, as long as the flash fits a Nikon shoemount, would the flash triggers work on that flash? So, all I do is attach the trigger transmitter to my hotshoe, and then the receiver to the stand, then the flash in the top of that, and when I shoot, the trigger will fire the flash? Correct?

Open Question: Is it possible to break my digital camera’s microphone from loud noises?

If it matters: I’m specifically using a Canon PowerShot SD960 IS. I’m just wondering if it’s possible to break a digital camera’s mic after certain decibels are reached; sayyyy, 120 decibels, for instance?

Resolved Question: what digital camera should I buy?

I’m kind of in between I don’t want a professional camera but I don’t want a cheap one either. I like taking good quality pictures and I would also like one that I can use at night without any problems. The ones I’ve used before have the options where you can set it for when is dark and everything but when I take a pic they are never of good quality. So what am i supposed to be looking for when I want to buy a good camera?

Open Question: upgrade to film from digital camera? (which camera should i get)?

Open Question: What would you like to aWhat kind of camera/camcorder should I purchase?sk?

Hi everyone - I am in the market for a new camera/camcorder. I want to take more pictures (and videos) of my two year old son - he is ALWAYS on the move so i need a camera that can take great moving shots. Im a novice at picture taking/ video makiing, so I would like a camera that is relatively easy to use, however, I will pay no more than $500.00 for the device. I am currently looking at lower-priced digital SLR cameras as I have been told that they are a great investment, however im not sure if SLR’s are actual camcorders as well. Is this true? If anyone has any advice on a specific brand or type on device feel free to comment. Thanks!

Resolved Question: Couple of questions regarding film?

I’ve recently become interested in film and had a couple of questions. The IMAX cameras. They use film, right? They aren’t digital? They use 70mm film gauge? Film is still the dominant method of filming movies, but would that change soon with digital? What are some examples of movies shot with film cameras? Movies show with digital cameras? What directors primarily use film cameras/digital cameras? A few specific ones: were film cameras or digital cameras used to film these movies: Avatar, The Dark Knight, Terminator Salvation, Inception. Is the only advantage of IMAX cameras the large resolution? Will some of the “cinematic” feel of movies be lost in the transition from film to digital? Apparently film grain contributes to the familiar look, but digital apparently gets rid of it. You don’t have to answer them all, and any random bits of info are appreciated! Thank you!

Open Question: How do I upload pictures already on my Facebook account onto a new computer?

A year ago I backpacked through China, Australia, and Japan. I loaded all my pictures onto my crappy old laptop, which I carried around with me the whole trip. The laptop was dying, so I uploaded all my pictures onto my Facebook account. 12 months later, the old computer is dead and the only place my photos exist is on Facebook. The thing is, I want to print actual physical pictures that I can frame and scrapbook. So now I’m trying to save my Facebook photos onto my computer as .jpg files and then burn them onto a CD which I can then take to a CVS photo or the like. But the files won’t go to my PMB program (I have a sony digital camera, and that’s the program sony requires owners use to view the images), even when I save them in that program. They exist in the temporary documents, but in the PMB program, the file I made is empty and I can’t open it (it’s name appears in light gray). I tried doing something with a mac but it won’t save as a .jpg program & consequently I am having difficulty burning the pictures onto a CD. Any suggestions? I have access to both a MacBook and a standard PC.

Open Question: Can I use my digital camera as a security camera when connected to my laptop?

Open Question: What’s a good digital camera?

I want it to be good quality so that the photos don’t come out blurry or fuzzy. And have it take good quality videos too (not blurry or fuzzy) and be able to take more than just a minute vid. Cause I’m probably gonna be using the video a lot for YouTube and stuff. My computer is Windows Vista, but I don’t know if that has anything to do with the camera choice. And I also want it to be around $150 but if its over no problem. Nothing fancy just a good quality camera, any suggestions? Thanks! I said it had to be around $150 not specifically under, if its more than that it’s fine What about around $200?

Open Question: What’s the best camera for clubbing and holidays?

I’m looking for a really small, stylish, pocket sized digital camera. It needs to have good quality pictures and be quick and easy to use. Mostly for going out with mates, clubbing, drinking, holidays etc… I wanna be able to pull it out my pocket, quickly take a picture and put it back, no waiting for it to load and no delay when I click the button, or having to fiddle with options etc… Just simple point and shoot. Then I’d wanna plug it into my laptop and upload to facebook. Any ideas on what the best camera would be! Thanks Chris

Open Question: Canon or Nikon Digital SLR camera?

I am completely torn between the Canon EOS Rebel T1i SLR Camera and the Nikon D5000. I am into macro, conceptual, and nature photography. And I can’t decide between either camera. The Nikon is about 20$ cheaper; but the Canon has had more reviews and is seemingly more popular. But I want to decide which camera I will buy; and use Photoshop or iPhoto. I’d really like if you could help my choose and have an explination(: Thank you!

Open Question: How to compress a video file?

I recently got a digital camera that can record 720p HD video. The camera saves it in .mov format, using H.264 compression. This results in huge file size, something like 3.5MB/sec. A 20 minute video clip would be 4GB. The video is only 30 fps and the camera only records mono sound. I have downloaded 720p movies and they are around 6-8GB for the whole movie. Is there something I can do to shrink down the size while not losing too much of the quality? Please also suggest other file format that may be more efficient in term of storage space than the .mov format

Open Question: can you use minolta 35 mm lenses on cannon digital cameras?

Open Question: Question for the Camera Heads out there.?

I’ve owned numerous digital cameras and throughout the years, they have ALL progressed. From 5.4 megapixels, to Image Stabilization, Face Detection, Touch Screen, and now I’ve seen some point & shoots go as far as 12x Optical Zoom and 12+ megapixels. Working in a camera department, I can read the specs. to many customers and let them know a comparion and contrast between cameras. Pretty basic. But then it comes down to the question I always hear. “Which is the best camera?” or “Is So & SO brand better than this brand?”… I’ve fallen almost a short of possible answers because for point & shoot cameras, most if not all have the basics that a camera has to offer. IS, different shooting modes, video capture, high megapixels, etc.. Some are waterproof, some shoot HD 720, Some still take double A’s rather and Lithium rechargeable. etccc… My point is, at one time, only few cameras had the qualities that set them apart from all the other cameras. Nowadays, most cameras function just about the same way. So it makes it a bit of a challenge to iron out major differences to win one camera over the other. A lot of times, I try to lean them towards a camera that feels comfortable to use. Something that’s easier to navigate rather. Because I know at times ,there are cameras that have many menu buttons and toggle switches that make it too much to be a learning curve on for some. SO! What would be something that would set a camera apart from any other camera? Is it the brand name? Is it because Ashton Kutcher uses it? or because Taylor Swift uses it? Why does the subtle megapixel differences drive everyone nuts? Helppppppp

Open Question: My camera says “This card cannot be used” when I insert a memory card. Please help?

Hi Everytime I insert an SD memory card in my Nikon Coolpix 5600 camera I get an error message saying “This card cannot be used”. I am using a 4GB memory card. The memory card works fine with my other digital camera. Could it be that the memory size is too big for the camera to handle? or could there be a problem with the camera? I appreciate any answers Unfortunately I do not have the manual but I know for a fact that the camera takes SD memory cards so the card type is correct. But is it even possible for a camera to have a size limit on the memory card it takes??

Open Question: What are the current prices for developing film straight to a CD?

Since my trusty digital camera died just in time for my trip to Italy (thanks, Canon -_-’), I found an old EOS 500 stashed away in the back of my grandmother’s closet and have been using that ever since. I took care into choosing what to shoot, but I went through two and a half rolls of film in only a week and I still have two and a half more weeks to go. There is a local photo lab that I hear is quite good (but that is said to have been ‘pretty pricey’ back in the day)… Could anybody give me a price estimate if I were to ask for the pictures to be put directly on a CD? How much does it cost where you live? Attic Gnome, because it’s 1.51 am and I’m really not down to go out right now…

Resolved Question: Is the Nikon D3000 a good camera, or should I go for something better?

I am new to photography and I know the D3000 has a nice guide feature. I’m going on a cruise in 2 days, and I need something better than my crappy point and shoot “facebook” camera. I will be buying a camera tomorrow which means I have 1 day to learn how to use it before I will be taking pictures. How hard is it to learn Digital SLR cameras and would I be better off spending a little more on a D5000 or something else? I’m also thinking worst case scenario, I get the d3000 and take it back to the store if I don’t like it.

Resolved Question: Can I share the same lens for a film and digital camera?

I’m looking for a digital camera and already posted a suggestion question. I have a canon t2 rebel (film camera) and i was wondering if i got a better lens (i’m not entirely sure what i have now… but i’d probably upgrade) and a digital body (e.g the rebel t2 digital), would i be able to use the same lens for both camera bodies? or am i better off just going with a nikon digital camera? for some reason i’ve always thought nikon lead the DSLR industry…

Open Question: Whats a good high quality digital camera that takes high quality pictures and videos?

No it doesn’t have to be professional. I don’t want the huge black cased cameras that professionals use. I already have one like that but cant use it because my mom owns it. I want to buy a good high quality digital camera that takes high quality pictures and videos. The videos to post on youtube, and the pictures for my makeup tutorials. Especially considering of good lighting. It doesn’t have to be fancy with billion of focusing options, but when i take a picture of my eye makeup id like for it to come out like in real life. Please help. Also im on a budget. Anything less than 100,the highest i can go is 200. Id prefer for it to be pink, but that’s just a bonus. If anything the color wont matter to me. Please all im asking for is a basic well put digital camera. Light wheight, nothing big. good zoom that’s still clear, with good light contrast(closer things aren’t a million times brighter than the background), strong not amazingly easy to break(which is why i’m asking this question), very high quality pictures/zoom/color/color contrast/brightness, with night mode, movie mode

Open Question: What camera would be good for a “starting” photographer?

My sister is 15 and is actually pretty good at taking “professional” photos. She has a camera, but its barely better than some normal digital cameras. She is debating going into photography as a career (yes, I know its hard to get a job…but Im not talking about that so please no comments on that). Im just wondering, what would be a decent camera to get her to continue to allow her to take better quality pictures. What would be the best she could get for around $300? (New or good used condition) She takes still photos of nature as well as pictures of people (senior photos/wedding). She has a minolta right now. (not sure of model number or whatever) Its a minolta dimage z1…just asked my sister. She wants something better for hopefully under $300 or around there

Open Question: Does anyone know the travel length of a 440 fuel pump push rod?

I am trying to fire up my car with a mid-seventies 440 in it but am having trouble getting fuel to the carb. I am thinking that the fuel pump is bad. I installed it properly over the push rod but when I crank the engine, I am not drawing any fuel. I tested it by putting a small amount of fuel into the reservoir cup of a one man brake bleeder which has a clear hose about 8″ long. When I tried this test with the pump out of the car and pushing on the pump arm by hand, it drew fuel. When I installed it in the engine, it does not. I pulled the plug under the pump, saw that the pump arm was properly over the push rod, I then checked the travel of the pump arm using a tape measure and a digital camera so I could get a good look at the results. It appears that the travel length is about 1/4″ total. Is this the correct amount of travel for the pump to work? I am sure I pushed the pump farther than that when I pushed it by hand. I need to find out if I am still not doing or assembling something right or if the pump is shot and needs to be replaced. Also, when I rebuilt the carb, I filled the bowls with fuel. The engine ran for about 5-10 seconds but the pump still did not seem to draw any fuel but it was attached to the regular fuel line to the tank at the time. I have blown out the fuel lines with compressed air as well. Gas tank is brand new.

Open Question: I have a DSLR camera and my laptop monitor colors are completely off?

I used to upload my digital photography onto my desktop for adjustments and edits or just for viewing, but my desktop recently broke down and I’m forced to use my laptop. My laptop’s colors are highly inaccurate (it’s a cheap $500 laptop my mom got for me for college last year, which I appreciate but I can’t do my photography on this), so everything looks really awful and pale/gray no matter how I adjust the color and contrast. Can this problem be fixed by getting some sort of external monitor? Or is the problem within the laptop itself? I can’t afford another laptop, so is there another solution to view my pictures with accurate colors?

Open Question: Good Digital SLR Camera?

Hi! I really like cameras and photography is one of my favorite hobbies. I’m finally in the moment that I have a good job and I want to buy my next camera, this time a good DSLR. Trough the years I have used a lot of Canon and Sony DSLRs and I would like one of these brands preferably. So the question is, what camera would you recommend in a budget from $400 to $700 that can take a couple of good shots per second and what other lenses would you recommend? Would like to receive answers from a photographer, enthusiast or someone with good experience. Thank you for your help :)

Open Question: What do you like about your digital video camera?

Looking to purchase a digital video camera for general home use. I want it to have great zoom for capturing wildlife, great audio capture and HD video. I want my video productions to be as close to professional as possible from my camera recordings. What camera do you use & why? What do you like about it? What don’t you like about it? How user friendly is your camera? How computer compatible? What camera do you recommend?

Open Question: What do you think of these photos?

Which photo do you like the most? What about the least? Why? Constructive critique very welcome. The camera I use is a Canon Powershot G9 digital compact camera. http://yougottalosecontrol.deviantart.com/gallery/ Thanks! :) Haha, I see Caesar Augustus managed to go through all the photos and create an inclusive opinion in just 30 seconds! Wow, try beating that. Gonna be a hard one.

Open Question: Does anyone know where I can transfer DVD to 8mm?

It would make my life quite simpler. I know most people want the other way around, but I have a wonderful 8mm projector that I would love to use. I have a lot of films I have made with a digital camera that I would like to transfer to 8mm, as making films with my 8mm camera can be quite expensive and take a long time, due to having to order the film over the internet… And help will be greatly appreciated.

Open Question: Best HD Camera For Semi-Serious Filming?

Hey, i’m getting back into filming and I’m already forming my team and are gathering ideas for films. Now I just need to figure what camera would be ideal to use. My friend notified me that the Canon 550D- http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Canon+-+EOS+Rebel+T2i+18.0-Megapixel+Digital+SLR+Camera+-+Black/9778635.p?id=1218171770784&skuId=9778635 Is the ideal camera to use since it’s as good as a 5k professional camera. I want to ask if you all agree or think if there’s anything else that may be better. Btw my budget is around 1k. Thanks

Open Question: Is there a way to make your webcam on a laptop to record something for hours?

I have 3 dogs and one of them keeps peeing in the house and I don’t know how to catch which one’s doing it. Can I somehow use my laptop to record a room for up to 5 hours straight? Or can you just use a regular digital camera to do this? Any cheap suggestions?

Open Question: What do you think about my photography?

Just a beginner. I have been doing photography for maybe about a year but had a break for a bit and just got back into photography again. I use a basic 12.2 mp fujifilm digital camera. It isn’t professional but I’m saving up for one. =] I use to use a kodak 2.1 mp camera but it wasn’t good enough. Just wanted to know what people thought about my photos. Any advice? Would really appreciate advice/cristism etc from professional photographers. What was your favourite photo and least favourite, what can I work on? What would you give it out of ten?? Here’s a link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/52234117@N05/ Thanks I’ve added more pics since my last question. They’re not that good. Just wanted other peoples opinions. =]

Open Question: If you had $300, would you spend it on a new camera or save it for a trip to Europe?

After saving up some money this summer, I finally have $300. Now, I was originally saving this money to buy a digital SLR camera, but now I’m wondering if I should just take $100 and use it to go shopping during my trip to Europe. What do you think? @ strange-artist: I would too!

Open Question: Last time asking this i promise but what do you think of my photos?

I’ve probably posted this question like a million times but somehow always wound up deleting it. Now this is the last time in gonna post it, i’ve included quite a few pictures this time, instead of the five in which i believed were the best. I’ll admit some of these are beyond bad, but i wanted to show the whole of my kinda portfolio from the past year and a half, and hopefully shown a LITTLE improvement, and i hope you’ll be able to tell the ones taken in the past from present:) I’m fourteen and used a 6/7mp vivitar digital camera, so not a slr YET, i’m still saving i’m hoping i get to that one soon but for now i have to stick with this not so great camera. I’m hoping for CONSTRUCTIVE critism please don’t just say how rubbish it is, please tell me why and how i can improve. I really want to be a photographer in the future and i know its a bit early to try and start now but i love it. thank you:). And i’d be majorly grateful if you helped me choose the best five. thanks:) LINK : http://www.flickr.com/photos/52549898@N03/ Btw feel free to add me on flickr:)

Open Question: Cheap-ish Camera that takes generally decent pictures?

Well, at first I was looking at Bridge Cameras and found a decent one for cheap but I was told that I should not get a bridge camera and I should get a Digital SLR instead which is understandable but I decided to do some research on them and they are WAAAY too expensive for my price range, I’m an unemployed teenager, I can’t afford something like that right now. The main reason I want a camera is to take photos for memories and maybe photography related reasons occasionally but that’s it, I don’t intend to use a camera for professional purposes so I don’t really need to go out and spend a ton of money unless I have a good reason for owning such an expensive camera. My friend has the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS and I quite like it…the pictures are nice but my only problem is it takes a while to focus and taking high quality focused pictures is annoying as you have to hold the button half way before you take a picture. (I’m not sure if this is common though, if it is I can put up with something like that) Oh and the camera records video as well which I’m not particularly desperate for so if there was a camera that is as good as that for the same price or less that doesn’t do video and is perhaps even better, I’d like to know please… :) I don’t know, just give me some ideas…like I said, I’m not looking for anything professional here, I like the idea of buying a DSLR and upgrading parts over time but I really don’t need to, honestly. :) THANKS FOR READING! :D

Open Question: What kind of film and/or lens should I use to make a picture look old fashioned (film not digital)?

I have a manual camera I tool around with. Is there a kind of film that will take the best vintage looking photographs (i.e. speed, brand…). By vintage I mean early balck and white era amost tintype-esque. Also is there a lens that may give a more vintage look? I am a novice so any advice would be much appereciated. I have tried Kodaks black and white 400 speed (TRI-X and TMAX).

Open Question: I’m looking for a relatively inexpensive laminated photo ID system.?

I need something that can be used from a Windows Vista based laptop. I have a digital camera, but I’m interested in software and badges that can be printed out on the spot. Either plastic or laminated would be fine. Let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks!

Open Question: Have you ever borrowed anything from your family…?

I have to borrow my cousin’s digital camera to take a few pictures, but I feel guilty; I’ve never borrowed anything this big. Normally I would use my sister’s but she is away. It’s not about the parents mentioning anything…I just feel guilty!!!!!!
